How To Write Letter Of Recommendation

Submitted by Ellie L on 08/06/2009
The good thing about such letter is that you just have to point out the positive side because if you are going to point out the negative, it is as good as not writing a letter at all. And, usually, a person’s future in the company depends on your hands, so better write the letter as well as you can.

To better answer the question on your mind on how to write letter of recommendation, follow the simple steps listed below:

Step 1
You must know what type of recommendation letter you are going to write. Generally, recommendation is a reference and there are three types of reference letter as follow:
•    Academic Reference—this letter of recommendation is given by a professor, teacher, school principal or trainer. It speaks of one’s aptitude, abilities, skills and attitude towards academic outlook and performance.
•    Character Reference—a reference given by an associate, friends or even relatives which vouches for a person’s qualities as well as abilities.
•    Employment Reference—this is a professional letter given by a supervisor evaluating the overall aptitude of a person as well as his employment performance for a certain period of time.

Step 2
Keep you letter of recommendation concise and direct. The recipient of the letter may not have ample of time to review the credentials. Therefore, make your letter direct whether or not you are vouching for the person. A personalized letter of recommendation is much heavier than those that are not.

Step 3
Always make the reader feel you are credible enough for such recommendation. Use your company’s letterhead to make your letter look formal and include you title and your signature.

Step 4
Make your letter interesting. Your first paragraph must project your interest in writing the letter of recommendation. If possible, don’t use generic or the common opening as they always project a lack of interest on your side. You ay invite the reader to contact you should they have further questions about the person you are recommending. Follow the simple steps below so that you will be guided how to write each paragraph of your recommendation letter:
•    First Paragraph—this is, obviously, the opening of you letter. Be sure to present you purpose on you very first sentence, which is a sort of introduction to your second sentence which will also introduce the person you are recommending by specifying how long you may have known him/her.
•    Second and Third Paragraphs—since these are the body of your letter they must reflect the character as well as the performance of the person. Make them more relevant to the purpose why you are recommending the person.
•    Fourth Paragraph—in your closing statement you must express your recommendation. Reiterate the qualities of the person you are recommending and show your confidence in him.

Those are the simplest steps on how to write letter of recommendation.
