How To Write A Legal Character Reference

Submitted by MeKnows on 08/06/2009
Leaders have heavier responsibilities whether you are a leader in a business or community. There will always come a time that you will be asked to write a reference letter for one of the members of your group. In cases like this, a simple reference letter is also a legal letter. It means that you can be held liable for all the statements contained in your letter. A legal character reference letter is not like other generic reference letters; you will need to take some time to make a draft which would specifically states how the applicant intends to use it.

Follow the simple steps below to write a legal character reference letter:

Step 1
Be sure to know the character of the person you are writing for. In cases that you don’t know the person, you cannot be forced to write a letter. However, if you really feel obliged to do it you can conduct some research by asking some of the members of your group who may have known the person better that you. You may have some records in your possession; you can use them to assist you also.

Step 2
Print the document in a clean and neat sheet of paper. Spending around .50 cents for a professional paper is enough to have a more dignified letter. Such attitude will suggest how you respect the person you are writing for as well as the recipient.

Step 3
Print a concise and direct letter. Being concise does not necessarily means short but it means that the document contains all the relevant information needed. However, if possible, use only one sheep of paper. You also need to state your point straight off but in a rather modest and formal way. Being direct doesn’t mean boisterous.

Step 4
State the truth about the person. Print only those things you know about the person. Honesty is very important to all companies. However, you also need to be considerate in stating each point especially the negative ones. Although negative in its sense, you can state them in a rather positive way.

Step 5
Do not delay your letter. If you have agreed to write a legal character reference, write it as quickly as you can without sacrificing the purpose of the letter. By delaying it, a person’s career could be hanging in your hands. Usually, companies opt to hire somebody else whose background is easy to access, so don’t waste time.
