How To Treat Heat Rash

Submitted by Ellie L on 10/06/2009

Heat rashes are very common in humid or a hot environment. They develop when the sweat is trapped in the skin for quite a long time. The skin becomes prickly and red dots start to appear. As long as it is just a heat rash, you can treat it on your own without the help of a doctor. However, if there are other factors that caused the rash, you must have it looked at by the doctor. Follow the steps below to treat heat rash:

Step 1
The following are things you can use to treat heat rash;

•    Calamine lotion
•    Mild soap
•    Baking soda/dry oatmeal
•    Cotton clothes
•    Cotton towels
•    Antihistamine

Step 2
If you have a heat rash, don’t stay in direct heat. Try to stay in the shade or inside an air-conditioned room

Step 3
Keep the heat rash area dry at all times to prevent further rashes.

Step 4
You must cleanse the affected rash area with water and mild soap. Facial cleansers could also help.

Step 5
Never irritate the affected area. So after rinsing it with water, just pat it with a cotton towel until it is thoroughly dry.

Step 6
Do not scratch the rash if it is itching, instead, apply calamine lotion, which can be bought over the counter,  buy the creams instead of ointments.

Step 7
You may also use baking soda and oatmeal just to soothe the itchiness. You can mix baking soda and oatmeal into your bath water to give your skin good treatment.

Step 8
You must wear loose clothes made of cotton or even polypropylene to absorb the sweat which comes out from your body.

Step 9
If your rash gets worse, you must consult your doctor to be diagnosed properly. If in doubt you should always seek professional medical advice.
