How To Treat A Wasps Sting

Submitted by Ellie L on 06/15/2009
A wasp sting can really hurt and could be deadly in some people if they are not treated as a matter of urgency. Being stung by a wasp can happen repeatedly as some types of wasps are social wasps meaning they often can attack in groups. They also attack the same area which could cause the swelling caused by the sting to grow much larger than from a single sting.

After taking a wasp sting, look for the stinger/s and remove them as soon as possible. The stinger contains the wasps venom which could cause severe swelling. There are stinger removal kits available in most pharmacies. Its worth considering buying one and keeping it in a first aid kit, its basically a small pump that fits over the area and sucks out the sting.

As soon as you remove the stinger, treat the swelling with alcohol, because it has been affected with venom its important to irradicate any germs. The swelling can then be easily treated with ice, consistently applying ice, should see the swelling come under control fairly quickly.

These actions are just first aid and can only be effective if there are no additional effects felt aside from the affected area. If there are any indications of rashes as well as difficulty in breathing, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Some people can suffer an allergic reaction to the wasp sting and this could be fatal especially when there is difficulty in breathing.

Treating a wasp sting is easy but should be administered immediately. Any additional symptoms aside from pain and swelling in the affected area should have professional medical attention. If in any doubt always seek professional medical attention.
