Have you ever been interrupted or disconnected from the Internet? This is really the most annoying moment especially if you are in the middle of downloading files, sending an important online message to your boss, uploading pictures and files for your website, streaming video, playing an online game, or watching your favorite NASCAR race. How frustrating.
Well, you got not choice but to work on it. You need to perform the essential troubleshooting methods to restore your Internet connection. Here’s how to restore an Internet connection for you to be back online as soon as possible.
Step 1: Determine the reason why you got cut off. Try to recall if you do have paid your bill. Internet connection may be interrupted due to some billing issues. In this case, it is a system generated interruption that causes your modem to be offline. You then need to settle your account as soon as possible, for your modem to become online once more.
Step 2: Check the physical connections. This is the most important thing to do after confirming that there’s no problem with your account status. Begin checking the physical connections from the modem to the computer.
• Start from the main outlet and see if the modem lights are on. Be sure the modem is connected to the computer if it is wired or using an Ethernet cable. • Check if the router is turned on and connected to both the modem and the computer (wired connection). This is if you are using a router. Do the same thing if you have a wireless network except the router is not physically connected to the computer. • For modem-router just check if it is turned on. A modem-router is a type of modem capable of being a router. Therefore it can be use in either wired or wireless connections. • Be sure to check the modem or router is not on standby mode. If it is, then you need to restart the device. To identify if the modem is on standby mode, check the standby light. If it is lit then, it is on the standby mode; therefore your line is off.
Step 3: Perform a sequenced power-cycle method. This means that you need to turn off everything in the network including your computers as well as the modem. Here’s how to do a sequenced power-cycle:
1. Turn off the computers. 2. Wait for 30 seconds and then turn off the next networking device connected to the computer like a router. 3. Wait another 30 seconds before turning off the modem. When turning the modem off, you need to unplug its power cord from the outlet on the wall. 4. Everything should be off for about a minute. 5. After 1 minute, turn the modem back on. Plug it back in to the outlet. Be sure it’s not on standby mode. 6. Turn on the next device like a router if present. 7. Lastly, turn on the computers and open a browser to test if your connection is restored.
Ninety percent of the time, a sequenced power-cycle resolves the connection problem. It is the most recommended T/S method you can do prior to calling for technical assistance. It will refresh the modem, thus, restoring the Internet connection.
If it won’t do any good, you need to perform the advanced T/S steps. This would include the configuration of network properties and protocols as well as checking of the network adapters and IP addresses.
For you not to go wrong with the settings, you better call the technical support group of your ISP to give you the right settings for your network.
