Email spam, also known as junk mail is unwanted email messages that arrive on your computer sometimes in huge quantities. They are indistinguishable messages sent to numerous recipients through email. They are sometimes called unsolicited mail. Most of these spam emails are not manually created by a live person but rather by automated systems called bots.
The main reason why you receive spam messages is that your email address was captured by some spammers from websites, newsgroups, and some viruses that gather information from users. Afterwards, it was sold to other spammers who sent you the email spam. These spammers utilize one of the free email providers to send spam emails.
The best way to avoid these unwanted emails is to keep them from arriving in your inbox. Consider the following tips on how to prevent email spam.
Step 1: Avoid posting your email address anywhere over the Internet. Spammers use certain scripts that would gather email addresses from chat rooms, forums, websites and newsgroups. If it is necessary to post your email, create a different format like david@server.com to “david (at) server (dot) com.”
Step 2: Refrain from disclosing your email address especially to anyone you do not know in person unless you are aware of its purpose and usage.
Step 3: Do not purchase anything offered in the spam message. Moreover, never click on any link provided on the email from the unknown sender.
Step 4: Keep your address book updated. Save the necessary contacts in your address book such as your company, friends and family. By doing so, you can filter the messages coming form the addresses not saved in the address book. Hence, you can automatically place them in the spam or junk folder.
Step 5: Turn on the image blocking feature of your web-based email. Spammers often send images within emails and if you download these images they can tell that your email address is valid and therefore they will send you more spam.
Step 6: Utilize anti-spam software to help filter out spam mail automatically.
