How To Post A Video Online

Submitted by Torri Myler on 07/28/2010
Every day you watch some clips on YouTube, read several blogs, maybe even write your own. Everywhere you look there are music videos, movie trailers, clips showing people play sports, cook, have fun. When you watch all of these short movies you start thinking that it’s a great way to share your ideas, hobbies, passion and tips with others, so you decide to start making your own videos. It sounds simple, and it really is, you just have to know how to bite it.

First off you need to decide where you’ll be posting your video. Sites like YouTube or Facebook limit the length of the video you are allowed to post, but on your own blog you’re only dependent on the specific platform you’re on. The decision where you’ll be posting your video also depends on your target audience. If your subject is very specific, sticking to your blog readers might be enough for you. If, however, you’d like to share with as many viewers as possible, then going with a more public site is definitely the way to go.

Once you decide where and for whom you’ll be posting your video, you need to decide on the topic. You most likely already have in mind what it will be about, but you’ll have to narrow down to fit in a time slot you’ll be posting. If you’re a fan of cooking, talking about everything you like to make will take up too much time, so you’ll have to either cut down to one technique or present making of a specific dish in short steps; if you want to share your passion for fixed gear bikes, instead of presenting the history, the components, different brands and ways of caring for a bike, you’ll want to talk for example about importance of customizing the size to your height and built. Remember, that too much information at once may be unclear for the viewers, or if they’re looking for something specific they will not be interested in a video that covers too much.

Now that you have your specific subject in mind, you have to decide what the best way of presenting it is. You may want to sit in front of your webcam and just talk, you may want to have a friend record you on camera giving you a chance to demonstrate something and move around, or you may want to record your voice but for images use slideshow of pictures or some preexisting clips. There is no right or wrong here, so you should simply go with the way that is most comfortable for you and at the same has the biggest visual value for your topic.

After the decisions are made, all you’re left wit is recording. The great thing in digital era is that even if you stumble, mess up or are just not completely satisfied with the way your video turns out, you can easily make changes, fix it up or record a whole new thing without ruining miles of tape. So if you have something to say and show, get recording, post it, and wait for responses from viewers.
