How to Play Pinochle

Pinochle is one of the popular card games using 48 cards instead of 52. People always say that this game doesn’t have any standard rules but there are. The fact that the ranks to be used are 9, 10, Jacks, Queens, Kings and the Aces; each rank will have eight cards consisting two of each suit. Number 10 is the highest next to the Aces. Here are guidelines for a four-player pinochle game.

Step 1

You will need to have two sets of cards and take out those cards which will not be used. The cards which should be left would be 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. Remember to do the same to the other set and combine what’s left.

Step 2

You must also learn the basic possible combinations of pinochle:
•    Run—this combination is composed of Ace, 10, King, Queen and Jack; it is worth 15 points. Should you possess 9 and add it to the “run” then you will gain another extra point; 9 is always worth 1 point.
•    4 Aces—a combination of four aces of any suits is worth 10 points.
•    4 Kings—8 points will be gained for a combination of 4 kings.
•    4 Queens—this combination is worth 6 points.
•    4 Jack—4 points for this combination.
•    Marriage—composed of a King and Queen; it is worth 2 points if it is a trump suit, 4 points is guaranteed.
•    If you will have a Queen of Spades and Jack of Diamonds, you will gain 4 points for such combination.

Step 3

You must bid for your hand. Probably, the player sitting directly next to you may be your partner during the game. The one sitting to the left side of the dealer must start the bidding but he also has a right to pass. If everyone passes, the dealer will be the first one to bid.

Step 4

Naming a trump is much easier if you have a run. However, if you have none, then you must select a suit which you consider as your best-playing hand. Now, if you have two Aces of diamond with any suits of 10s (2) and a nine, you can do most of the tricks while the game is progressing.

Step 5

Remember that in pinochle, everyone will have to meld so it is expected that you will have to lay down your meld whatever combinations you got. They will be added together with the meld of your partner which will be written on any notepads.

Step 6

In playing your cards, you should lead a trump which everyone must beat by playing higher ranking cards. If anyone doesn’t have the same suit like the trump you played, he can play a different suit which everyone must also follow. You can follow the suit freely, unless you don’t have that suit to play.

Step 7

You can apply any pinochle tricks just to keep scoring. Aces, 10s and Kings have 1 point value but the rest don’t count. So, while on the play, play the cards which have points leaving others in your hand.

Step 8

The game must be continued until one can reach up to 500 points.
