When trying to implement a DOS games on Windows XP, sometimes it will run but not correctly and in many cases it won’t run at all.  Don’t be discouraged however, keeping reviewing the information provided here and find out how to get that DOS Game working on Windows XP.  Keep one thing in mind while there will be certain DOS games that will not work properly no what method you use.

Change Memory Settings – Sometimes when running DOS Games in a Non-native Windows XP program there’s the off chance that old methods may be required.  Changing the memory settings on your XP program can coax a non-responsive DOS Game to run.  Follow these steps to change the memory settings:

1.    Find the Dos Games Executable or.”EXE” File. Right click on file and select the “Properties” options.
2.    Locate the “Memory” tab and adjust memory values from the drop down menu to their highest level.  Note: double check to ensure the “Protected” and Use HMA boxes are checked.
3.    “Apply” new settings then click “OK”.   Try running the DOS game

Receiving an Error Message is good - While receiving an error message for many may be disheartening it can be quite helpful when trying to run old DOS games on Windows XP.  This can on the other hand be quite frustrating since most often when the DOS games has errors it will close completely out before your able to read the error message.  Here’s a method to ensure you have the opportunity to read the important Error message:

1.    Right click on the DOS games “EXE file” and select the “Properties” Options
2.    Find the “Program” tab.  Uncheck the box then close and exit tab settings
3.    Apply new settings then click OK
4.    Now attempt to run the DOS Game once more, only this time when the error message appears read it.

Go to a Google search box and enter in the error to see if you can find specific information and instruction on how to work with that specific error.  Note below the most common errors a DOS game may show and how to work with these errors to get the game working:

Runtime Error 200 – Most often your Windows XP program is running to fast for the DOS Game there by causing this common error.  Ironic to say the least! However the only way to get the computer to operate at the right speed could be as simple as finding a program such as “Mo’Slo” to slow the computer operating speed down.

This can possibly slow the computer down in order to get the game running on Windows XP.  Should you choose to avoid third party programming software also try manual adjustments to slow the computers speeds down.  Apply these following steps to manually adjust the computers speed:
1.    Right Click on the DOS games “ExE” file and select “Properties”
2.    Go to the Program tab and select advance program settings.
3.    Select the “Compatible Timer Emulation” box Click OK, Apply then OK again.

Keeping in mind that some DOS games simply wont work, trying a few tricks to tweak your system can be never ending task; therefore it’s best to research this trick online for each specific game, type of error to determine the best method
