How To Play Cribbage

Submitted by Stevie on 08/07/2009

Here are some simple steps on how to play cribbage:

Step 1

The players must sit directly opposite to each other with the cribbage board in between them. Pegs should start right at the top of the board.

Step 2

A player who can first reach a score of 121 after more series of games will be declared the winner.

Step 3

To determine who the dealer is, one must cut the cards and each one should get a card.

Step 4

Whoever gets a lower card should be the one to deal and shuffle the cards.

Step 5

Alternately, place cards facing downwards to every player’s side.

Step 6

Both players should take out two cards, putting them facing down, to form a crib. The dealer should be the one to get the crib and will also be the one to score it once the hand is played.

Step 7

Let the other player, the non-dealer, to cut the deck.

Step 8

Put the top deck under the low deck. This will signal the start of the game.

Step 9

When you are the dealer, you will move two holes in your peg when the start is a jack.

Step 10

The start will be placed together with the crib which will be counted at the end of the game.

How to play the hands

Step 1

When you are a non-dealer, you can play any card from your hand while calling out its value the moment you place it down.

Step 2

The dealer will also play any card in his possession and will call the sum of the two cards while placing down his card.

Step 3

Each player should alternately play until the sum of all the cards played can reach 31. If adding another card from your hand will exceed 31, you must not place it. If that happens, you must say “Go” to let the other player continue on placing his cards until he reaches 31.

Step 4

If every place doesn’t have a card to place to reach below or exactly 31, they must stop the play and count the score.

Step 5

The player who is closest to thirty one after he placed his last card should score 1 peg. While the player who has placed a card which summed up to 31 will score two pegs.

Step 6

Both players should turn their cards which are played facing down in front of them.

Step 7

Another set of cards should be played until a “Go” is said or until 31 is reached.

Step 8

Each of the players should alternately play until all the cards are used up.

Step 9

Once the cards are all used up, they should alternate the deal. The non-dealer will now become the dealer, and vice versa.
