How To Organize A Golf Tournament

Submitted by Paul on 06/15/2009
Organizing a golf tournament is not simple, there will be a lot of work and planning to be done, the bottom line is the better you prepare the smoother the event will run on the day. There are many steps to arranging the tournament, in this article i cover the general points, but there will be other issues that will no doubt arise further into your planning.

1. Consider the number of players you have, their general ability and any other facilities you may require, such as function rooms for presentations and dining capacity for catering for all the players and attendees.

2. Once you have a list of your requirements, contact several golf courses that generally match your requirements and discuss the potential event with them. The courses will be keen for you to host the tournament with then, so don't be afraid to haggle out a good deal.

3. There are many different styles of golf tournament, you will need to select one that suits your players and event.

4. You will need to work out a budget plan, start with the basic costs of having the course and facilities, then add to this what you expect to spend on prizes. Once you have these 2 major costs you should be able to work out how much you need to charge for tournament entry in order to at least break even. Once you have the basics in place you might consider other forms of raising capital in order to make the prize list more attractive to potential players.

5. You should pay some serious attention to the time of year you are holding the tournament, summer months will be more expensive than winter, but it likely to attract more players.

6. If it's a reasonable size event, you might want to consider setting up a website, this is a very efficient way of not only communicating with players, but also raising the general profile of the tournament.

7. Its customary after tournaments to have a meal and some form of entertainment, usually a guest speaker or comedian, but it could be a band or other live act. You will need to ensure you book this well in advance and get any such booking confirmed in writing.

8. If you event is of suitable size, you might consider trying to bring in sponsors. Companies often like to sponsor certain holes, displaying their banners or other advertizing material, its important to confirm all this in writing, and agree locations and placements with the golf course prior to the event.

9. Provide as much information to players in advance, including tees times, but also more basic things, like availability of accommodation, and transport to and from the venue.

10. If you require tournament referees and the like, you should consult your national golf association for advice.
