Today the flavour of Sangria varies from spicy and sweet but maintaining that sparking to include red and white wine Sangrias. Nonetheless Sangria is a drink enjoyed all over the world. Sangria is well known and accepted as originating from Spain, especially since the work Sangria means “bleeding” from its dark red color. Today Sangria white wine counterpart who is called “Sangria Blanco” is also very popular. Making Sangria is done by mixing wine, fruit juice, soda water and fruit. Sometime the mixture is prepared with brandy and/or other liqueurs. Most often people think that a Rioja is the ideal wine to create the traditional “Sangria” version; however this is not always the case, especially when any robust immature red wine will suffice. It is said the best Sangria is the Mexican style Sangria that is made by the glass. The wine is delicately mixed with Soda and lemonade instead of Spanish wine. There is no fruit however red wine severed chilled and is a very refreshing drink. No matter where you go, the local bar or restaurant you’ll find each venue has a different or speciality recipe for Sangria. Creating your very own recipe is easy by keeping these few basic elements in mind: • For the best result make sure to use quality ingredients such as a good quality wine, or anything type of liqueur you like by itself. • Since Sangria is best when served chilled, try chilling the liquid ingredient before making your sangria. Or prepare the Sangria hours before serving to allow for chilling. • Add extra sweeteners or any flavouring ingredients to your own specific taste. • Make sure to use a non-reactive mixing bowl or pitcher to blend the ingredients. • Don’t add the carbonated soda to the Sangria until ready to serve. • To keep the Sangria freshly chilled serve in a punch bowl or pitcher full of ice. Also try garnishing the Sangria with fresh fruit to wake up the flavour. Stir thoroughly the let chill for at least 18 to 24 hours. While this may seem like a long time ahead of serving, it’s wait is well worth it! For more delightful tasting sangria try blending in some fruit juice with the wine via osmosis in the refrigerator and then lightly stirring. After chilling for the required length of time stir the mixture again then add sugar, and/or brandy for the taste. You’ll find the flavour is a bit strong however sweet and somewhat syrupy. Cut the mixture using a spritzer or carbonated soda, a little lemon and orange flavouring if possible. Although plan carbonated water will do just fine.
