How To Make Diet Shakes

Submitted by Ellie L on 07/01/2009

Diet shakes are an easy, tasty and nutritious way to control your daily calorie intake. They can be used to jump start weight loss or they can be included as part of a daily diet plan to accelerate weight loss.

A meal replacement diet shake is slightly different from a diet shake as these shakes provide you with approximately 25% of your daily nutritional intake. Although nutritional requirements differ from person to person, the average nutritional intake for a   meal replacement diet shake is 250 calories. The shake should also contain 3g fiber, 9g protein, 6g fat and other essential vitamins and minerals.

There are several readymade diet shakes available in the market today. However, it is better to make your own diet shakes as the packaged ones generally have additional artificial preservatives and flavors. By making your own diet shakes, you can ensure that the ingredients are fresh and therefore have a higher content of minerals and vitamins and that there are no additives.  But the important question still remains, “how to make diet shakes?”

To make your own diet shake all you need is:

•    A blender
•    Fruits and vegetables which can either be frozen or fresh
•    Low calorie liquids for the base- skim milk or non-fat yogurt are good options.
•    Protein powder(optional)

Choco-banana Diet shake Recipe:

Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 small or medium ripe banana and 1 cup of skim milk to your blender and blend until you have a thick shake. Add a few cubes to your diet shake if you wish to.
You can also add a handful of nuts to your shake or sprinkle it with crushed nuts. Nuts are high in several healthy fats as well as vitamins, minerals and fiber content and will increase the nutritional values of your milkshake as well as make it more flavorful.
You can also add about 1 teaspoon of toasted wheat germ to your diet shake. This will help to increase the nutritional value of the shake without drastically increasing the calorific value.

A diet shake is a healthy option as a snack. However, if you intend to include them as a meal replacement option, you should consult a nutritionist first.
