A path can create a more intense anticipation on the part of the visitors that’s why you can never see a garden whose major focal point is presented to you the moment you enter the domain. So, creating garden paths is more than just putting gravel or dirt for the visitors to step on; it is a way of presenting the beauty of your designs.
There are two major categories of line arrangement in landscape gardening; the formal lines and the informal lines. A landscape gardener may choose either of the two. But to give you a better understanding what these lines really are, here are their simple explanations;
Formal line is an arrangement which follows straight rows and columns, thus there would be a straight path to the major focal point. Usually this kind of garden arrangement is too stiff and direct; you cannot go astray where to go as the garden path may lead directly to the main attraction. Gardens which use this kind of arrangement are not boring to look at as there would be plenty of minor highlights as you make your way step-by-step and thus, easy for the visitors.
On the other hand, informal line arrangement is the opposite. The garden paths may be too wiggly and fussy but still lead to the main attraction. This is also the most common arrangement used by majority of homeowners.
Now, in making your garden paths decide which line to use. You can have both but everything really depends on the style of your garden. Your footpath may be made of gravel, grass, stepping stones, patio or even soil.
Gravel will really make a fine path with highlights which can be visible enough even at night. It is also very neat to look at. A flowery margin will enhance the smooth texture of the pebbles. Although beautiful, you may not have sufficient gravel at your command.
Grass is somehow, the most common garden path. However, you also need to have a border when using this path so that the visitors will have a clearer guide. If possible, use different kind of grass other than those you are using as ground cover in your lawn.
Stepping stones could require much effort as you have to dig a hole in your garden to put in the stones considering the distance between them. After which, you have to surround them with soil and decorate with paint or you can just leave them as they are. Be sure that they are flat enough at the top to avoid any injuries.
And for the soil footpaths, you should choose the part where the soil is dense enough and will not turn to mud when wet. Flower borders on both sides will really make it more elegant to look at.
And remember that when making garden paths avoid abrupt turns because they will destroy the over all appeal of the garden. If possible put minor focal points every turn.
Landscape gardening is all about expression. There are a lot to be done to convert your lawn into your beautiful and peaceful haven and you can just discover them if you yourself will start the work. Enjoy!
