There are also specific ways to make a turban for a man, woman or kids. Aside from traditional turbans there are additional reasons for a turban such as chemotherapy head dressings. Basically anyone can have a use for a turban regardless of culture or religion.
The typical fabric and length for a turban is either gauze or broadcloth, which should be at least 2 ½ yards long and 2 feet wide. When making a turban for the first time you should practice a while and have plenty of patience. Simply follow these standard instructions to make a turban of your own:
1st. Use a turban cap that fits firmly to the head. This keeps loose hair wisps from escaping under the turban.
2nd. Take the strip of fabric and lay it over your head. Allow for at least 8 inches of the cotton strip to fall below the neck line and the face.
3rd. To begin warping, put one hand on top of your head to secure the fabric. Using the other hand take the face strip and being wrapping it around your head from the right side towards the back of the head and make a complete circle. Be sure to pull the fabric cloth as tight as possible while wrapping.
4th. Begin the second wrap by titling the head to the right slightly that will make the right side of the wrap look lower then the left side, when looking at it straight.
5th. Begin the next wrap around, now titling the head to the back and the highest side of the turban warp is higher than the last warp around you made.
6th. Repeat this wrapping motion a number of times around the head. Each time wrapping around remember to tilt turban so it’s further clockwise round the head allowing the tilt to begin forming vertically.
7th. Continue this motion with the first fabric strip until it is completely wrapped around the head. You should have the back fabric strip left.
8th. Taking the last fabric strip from the back wrap it horizontally around the lower portion of the turban to secure the turban wraps. Be sure to tuck the end of this wrap underneath the other wrap.
9th. Once you’ve reached the end of the second fabric strip be sure to tuck the end piece under the lower turban wrap.
10th. For a more traditional wrap which is lower on the face and head tilt the head backwards when wrapping the turban.
With a little practice using this method of making a turban, you’ll be on the road to creating your own turban styles traditionally inspired.
