How To Make A Room Safe For Children

Submitted by Sunbuster on 03/07/2011

When furnishing or decorating a room in your house it is important to take extra care with your decisions if you have children. Whether or not the room you are decorating is the childs room or not you should make sure that there is nothing that can be a possible danger. The most common items that can pose a threat to small children are identifiable with a bit of common sense.

Electrical outlets will not pose a threat on their own but you should make sure when using any electrical items that they are out of the reach of children. Hot appliances such as hair straighteners and irons can be dangerous as well as fire hazards if left on and unattended. Ensure that any appliances which are heated up are turned off when not in use and out of the reach of children. It is also worth ensuring that electrical appliances are kept at a height that is unreachable by small children

Stairs are an obvious safety issue. There are many items on the market which can prevent children from getting access to stairs such as stair gates. Sharp or hard surfaces in a room can be an accident waiting to happen if you have children, especially if the furniture in question is at the same current height as your children. Awareness of where these problem areas are can help to avoid any accidents. It would also be prudent to avoid placing any childrens toys or items near any hard surfaces to avoid accidents.

Hazardous materials such as cleaning agents or medicines should be kept out of childrens reach and in a locked cupboard if at all possible. There are many household cleaning products which are packaged in bright neon colours which can catch the interest of young children. Keep all such items locked away to avoid any accidents.

There have been many incidents in the past of children injuring themselves on the cords that hang from window blinds. There is now a blind on the market called the Sunbuster which attaches to the window without any need for a cord making it perfectly safe for use in any room that a child may wander into.

As you can see there are a number of steps you can take to make a home as safe as possible for your children but the most important one of all is to keep a constant watch over them.
