How To Make A Band More Popular

Submitted by Torri Myler on 08/26/2010

Everyone who has ever played in a band knows how hard it is to start off on a bigger scale. It usually begins in one of the members’ garage. If the musicians are lucky and know people from the business they often have a chance to play in a small music bar or at some school events but that is usually where the career stops. Not many make it further. Actually it is not very fair because nowadays it doesn’t really matter how good you are or what kind of music you play. It is a matter of luck and good promotion. You can either resign accepting the fact your band will never play in huge stadiums for thousands of people or you can start going with the flow and, next to making good music help your band by promoting it.

Promotion and advertising is expensive and since young bands spend all their money on music instruments and sound equipment they probably can’t afford anything else. Luckily there are computers and the Internet – using them can give many possibilities when it comes to advertising and most of all, it won’t cost anything. All you need is a good idea, patience and maybe some expert advice.

First thing that every young band should do is recording their work. At the beginning you won’t need any professional equipment – just a simple recorder. What you can do is take care of the acoustic in the place you usually practice – there are various methods to make the sound spread better. It’s also good to make a video of you playing. Here you can even use a webcam – install it in one place making sure the all of you fit in the picture.

Once you have a couple of recordings – both sound only and the videos - you can look for all kinds of social networks and create a profile of your band on each of them. Mention the type of music you play, tell something about each member, and write a short history of the group. Don’t forget to give info details so that every interested person can contact you easily. Finally upload the music and videos you recorded along with detailed description. Many music producers visit young band’s profiles to find the ones they want to co operate with – this is a big chance for you.

Even if you are present online with your music, sooner or later you will have to get a proper website for your band. At the beginning you can ask around, maybe there is a young web design student that could create a site for you free of charge or for a couple of tickets to your show. When you have a site already but you want to improve it and make it more professional you can hire a web designer. It is usually expensive but who knows, maybe after hearing you play a famous web design Miami, New York or Los Angeles expert will agree to make a site for you at a lower price?

Nowadays you can’t just sit and wait until someone notices you. You have to take action and try many things to achieve success. Determination, patience and a little bit of insolence are features you just have to learn if you want to get what you want.
