Learning how to grow Zucchini is fairly easy, even for the novice gardener. Zucchini is part of the pumpkin/squash family and produces a good crop from just a few plants, in fact you won't need more than a couple of plants to get a great crop.
1. Zucchini plants do not like the cold, so you need to ensure you do not set the plants outside until the outdoor temperate is around 65 degrees fahrenheit.
2. Prepare the soil in a mound messuring around 20inches across, you can add some good compost to ensure a nice rich planting area.
3. Zucchini is a vine type plant, and you therefore must ensure there is ample gap of around 3-4 feet between mounds.
4. You should plant approximately 4-5 seeds per mound at intervals of 6inches.
5. The mounds will require aa good watering twice a week, and you should focus the watering on the base of the plants, as watering leaves can introduce diseases.
6. As the plants really start to grow, you should picks the two best plants per mound and remove the weaker ones.
7. In the earlier stages of growth, its important you support the plants with stakes, these can be removed at a later stage when the plants are big enough to support their own wieght.
8. You need to keep the areas immediatly around the plants weed free, you can use some mulch between the mounds to help with this. Once the plants are larger the leaves should keep the soil well shaded, this is discourage weed growth.
9. You will need to watch out for a variety of pests, such as the cucumber beetle and vine borers as they can eat through the plant and spread disease. You may need to apply some insecticide should you have problems with these pests.
10. The Zucchini plant is a fast grower, care should be taken to pick them when they are around 6inches long.
