Sweet corn is easy to grow and doesn’t require much of a space that is why it has become common as it can be grown in the backyard. It is very versatile and can be used as ingredient for your meals or can be served as food for all the family. Here are some easy steps to show you how to grow your own sweet corn:
Step 1 Find a good place to grow you sweet corn. Look for a soil which has a pH between 6.0 and 6.5; you can add limestone to increase the pH if you find it too low. Also, the soil must be neither so dry nor wet as the kernel can rot if there are too much moisture in the soil.
Step 2 Plant you sweet corn in a place where there is good exposure to sunlight. The ideal soil temperature for the sweet corn to have maximum growth is between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 3 Use natural fertilizers. Composting is one of the best ways to make your soil rich. If possible, don’t use artificial fertilizers. There has bee a study that natural fertilizers produce larger and healthy kernels than the artificial fertilizers do.
Step 4 An ideal depth of the hole where you will sink your kernels is 1.5 inch and a foot apart. The rows must be between 24 to 32 inches apart.
Step 5 Never forget to water the sweet corn at least twice a day before they sprout. If the first leaves are visible, you can water them once a day but generously.
Step 6 Take away the weeds from your garden; make it exclusive for you sweet corn only as weeds will take away the minerals needed for the growth of your sweet corn.
