Mushrooms are edible types of fungus, commonly used in different cooking menus and recipes. The main reason why more people love to eat foods with mushrooms is because of its unique flavor and taste. Moreover, mushrooms not only have great savor but also offer health benefits. With regard to nutrients, mushrooms are the rich sources of Vitamin D, which is essential to our health. Other than the flavor and the nutrients mushrooms have, another good thing about them is that they are easy to nurture. There is no need to till any land or soil for your garden because growing mushrooms does not require any garden at all.
Here are some simple instructions on how to grow mushrooms at home:
Step 1: Make your variety preference. The first thing you have to do prior to anything is to decide which kind of mushroom you want to grow at home. There are several varieties you could select from and they are available in the market.
Step 2: Use any available means for growing mushrooms. Mushrooms do not have chlorophyll and they can grow without sunlight. They get all the nutrients they need from the medium where they grow. The medium that we are referring to is also known as the substrate. It is an object where they are placed in and eventually, grow and feed on the embedded supplements. These substrates include: straw, cotton seeds, corn cobs and other similar materials. The supplements embedded on the substrate include nitrogen and gypsium, which are essential for mushrooms growth.
Step 3: Utilize available alternatives. You can be more practical in growing mushrooms at home. Find any available tools to be used as an alternative substrate such as unused jars or containers. You can place your home-made supplements for the mushrooms to feed on such as rice flower and vermiculites. Sterilize the jars or containers, which contain the home-made supplements preferably using a pressure cooker.
Step 4: Place the spores to the medium. You can use any kind of covering in order to normalize the humidity as well as the warmth. Utilize the covering and put them in place to let the spore develop into a form of mycelium, also known as the root-like filaments. Be sure not to expose them to direct sunlight.
Step 5: When the spores mature and transform into “cakes” structure, move them into a bigger container that will serve as their fruiting hollow. After 15 to 30 days of applying layer of peat over the filaments, you will notice tiny thorns thrust through the soil. This is already the “pinning” stage in which the so-called “protuberances” will develop into big and small mushrooms. When the mushrooms matured, you can already make your first harvest.
