How To Grow Grapes

Submitted by MeKnows on 08/06/2009
The success of the growth of your grapes depends on many things but there are also factors to be considered as pre-requisite prior to planting the seeds of the grapes. To plant grapes entails dedication of your time for gardening, making sure that the soil where you are going to grow the seeds has enough moisture and that it is well exposed to the sun. Another thing you just can’t afford to neglect is the type of the grapes you will be planting as there are three types, namely: table, wine and slipskin.

Step 1
Choose the type of grapes you want to grow and the one which will suit the climate in you location. You may ask your local agriculturist’s office for further information.

Step 2
Plant your seeds or seedlings in a place where they can be exposed to the sun, because vines which grow in shaded areas are more likely to get a disease caused by fungi.

Step 3
Cultivate the soil from time to time. By doing so, you can make the soil loose enough to easily drain the water as well as to become loamy. Adding compost will make the soil ideal for the growth of the grapes.

Step 4
As the vines grow, provide a stronger support for them. You may use a lattice to support them in such a way that the fruits will not touch the surface of the soil.

Step 5
Prune the vines which do not produce fruits. This will also give way to new vines to grow. Those vines which are old enough cannot bear much fruit so prune them too.

Step 6
Be sure to check if you can find many long runners. You may also prune them so that you can keep the vines compact and controllable.
