Celery is becoming more and more popular, its makeup means its extremely low in calories and ideal as a snack for those watching their wieght! The leaves can also be used to make tasty soup.
1. You will need to add some good quality fertiliser to the soil prior to planting.
2. You can sew your celery seeds in batches of 5 per station, around 5mm in depth.
3. Thin out the weaker plants allowing the stronger specimins to grow cleanly.
4. Once your celery plants are around 6 weeks old and 8-10cm tall, you can plant them out, space them around 20cm apart in rows that are 1m apart.
5. Celery does not grow well in hot conditions unless they are very well watered.
6. The compost or manure that you have used will help reatain moisture that ensures the celery grows well, ensure you keep the soil moist.
7. It's important to ensure weeds are kept in check as they will suck the soil dry of moisture and nutrients damaging the celery plants.
8. In order to reduce the bitter taste you can blanch the stems to prevent light getting to them, this can be done about a month before you are due to harvest the celery.
9. To harvest the celery, cut the plant off above the soil so that all the stalks are still as one, wash the stalk bulb in cold water and pat gently dry.
10. Store the celery in the fridge, it should keep for up to 14days or so.
