How To Get Rid Of Skunks

Submitted by Addingtons on 09/19/2009
Skunks are really good-looking and cute animals, however, they have their own foul smell which they spray. The skunks spray serves as their defense mechanism when they encounter a predator which they think is a threat. Humans are always threats to them so they tend to spray their foul-smelling perfume if ever they can encounter one. Another thing you should be aware of, these little animals can carry considerable amount of rabies; so when they bite, it can be worse than dogs. It is important to get rid of them from around your homes.

Step 1
The very first thing you should do is to prevent the skunks from having food in your backyard. If they find there is no food to be eaten in your yard, they will find another place which they can scavenge from.  They are also attracted to foods of cats and dogs or even the trash; so, it’s best to seal your trash with chicken wire and keep pet food out of their way.

Step 2
If you have trees which bear fruits, skunks will naturally be attracted to them. Try to wrap each fruit with paper bags to keep the smell off. Fruits are very attractive to them especially when they are hungry. You may chose to pick the fruit early to avoid it becoming a food source.

Step 3
Skunks are always thirsty after a whole day scavenging so they will need water. Try to empty the cans and other sources of water which can be found in your surroundings.

Step 4
Skunks rarely show themselves during daylight hours, they are quite timid in the light. So if you can keep your backyard lit, that will also make them flee to other places with low lights.

Step 5
Now, if you will be able to locate where the skunks live, you can stay awake at night and wait until they are out of their temporary home. You can seal their home so that they cannot come back inside. In that way, they will look for a place where they can continue to live without any disturbances.
