How To Format Your Personal Computer

Submitted by Cutting Edge Computing on 08/27/2009
There are times when your computer runs really slow or has many errors or unexpected shutdowns. Manually fixing all these problems can be timecomsuming or difficult for a novice. The fastest way to fix all of the problems on your computer is to reformat it, in other words put it back to factory settings.

Before you get started you must have the following:

•    Computer
•    Hard drive
•    CD/DVD ROM
•    Operating System on CD

Steps to Format a PC

Step 1
Before doing anything on your PC, you must back up every important file you have on it. You can either save them on CDs or onto your USB flash drives. Remember that reformatting the computer will erase everything on the hard drive, so always ensure and double check you have backed up all your files.

Step 2
Restart your PC and open the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) by simply pressing “F2” or “Delete” key during the boot process. Once you can see a blue screen with white fonts, you are inside the BIOS.

Step 3
Set up the first boot device as “CD-ROM”. It means that when the computer restarts, it will automatically load system files from the CD in the CD-ROM drive. Before you exit the BIOS, be sure to save everything by pressing “F10” key or simply choosing “Y” upon exit.

Step 4
Insert the “Bootable CD” into your CD/DVD-ROM drive before you restart your PC. Usually, Operating System CDs are bootable so you don’t have to look or create bootable ones.

Step 5
Restart your computer and wait until it is done loading the system files from CD. Once done, just follow the step by step instructions provided by the CD itself. You may delete the partitions or add; it is all up to you how you manage your hard drive.

Step 6
While following the instructions, you will be prompted to format the Drive C: you may continue doing so. It will take about 10 minutes or more to completely format the whole of the hard drive.

Step 7
After the formatting process, the Operating System will be installed which will lasts about 45 minutes. You need to have patience because that is the normal duration.

Step 8
When everything is done, you will need to reinstall any missing drivers, windows updates, and any other software you wish.
