People often worry about the temperature of their laptop or indeed their desktop. Overheating is often blamed for system or hardward problems without really ever being sure. This guide will teach you how to find laptop temperature, this will allow you to more quickly track down the root of the problem. First you will need to download Speedfan. Speedfan is a widely used utility to keep track of your motherboard and CPU temperatures, your fan speeds, and the voltages from your power supply. After you install and start Speedfan the right-hand panel of the main window will show the temperature readings from the sensors on your motherboard, as well as the sensor embedded in most CPUs. To check the CPU temperature you will need to work out which of the temperature readings refer to the CPU. Single core computers will only have on CPU reading, whereas multiple core systems should have a reading for each core. Generally temperatures labeled with HD refer to the temperate of the hard drive and those labeled as Core refer to the core temperature of the CPU which is the reading that we are interested in for the purpose of this guide. If it is unclear which is which close any open applications (except Speedfan!) and wait a few minutes for the temperatures to level out. At this point make a note of all the temperatures. Next increase the load your CPU.. You can increase the load by downloading a free utility called CPU Burn-in http://users.bigpond.net.au/CPUburn/. OPen CPU Burn-in and set the time for 1 minute. It is not necessary to run it for longer and is not recommened especially if you suspect an overheating problem. If you have a dual-core processor then you will need to run two instances of CPU Burn-in. While CPU Burn-in is running for 1 minute monitor the temperature readouts in Speedfan. The temperature that increases the fastest will be the CPU reading or in the case of a dual core system you will see two temperatures increasing rapidly, one for each core in the CPU. When monitoring your laptops temperature over normal daily use, if the temperature is over 70ºC it is recommended you look into alternate cooling methods for your laptop. The lifespan and performance of the CPU will be shortened when running at high temperatures.
