How To Do Acrylic Nails

Submitted by Ellie L on 06/15/2009
Acrylic nails tend to look more natural than more traditional fake nails as they are applied as a liquid, rather than glued on, they often last longer, but of course are more expensive. It is perfectly possible to apply acrylic nails at home, however it is a skill, and not something that you will be able to do well first time, it will require a good degree of practice to get right. For professional results its best to book into a salon to have them done, however if you fancy learning to do them at home, here's how:

Basic materials required:

Anti bacterial spray, or other hand sanitizer
Nail polish remover
Nail file
Glue and nail oil
Liquid & powder acrylic
Acrylic application brush
Acrylic nipper
Nail tips

Once you have assembled all the above materials you will need to get your nails prepared, a good manicure is ideal. Cut your nails short, this helps to ensure the real nail isn't damaged if the acrylic nail is ripped off. Ensure any previous nail polish is removed and the nails are files and buffed. Dry the nails and use the anti bac spray or sanitizer to ensure bacteria is keep under control. It's also important to ensure you are working in a well ventilated area as the chemicals you will be using can be very strong.

Apply the nail tips, and trim and file to size, this needs to be done before you begin to apply the acrylic. Pour the acrylic liquid into a small suitable dish and dip the brush into it, then wipe the excess from the brush and dip into the acrylic powder. Apply the brush to you real nail and acrylic tip, you will need to make several brushes to bring the acrylic nail up to the same height as the nail tip. You need to ensure you don’t apply the acrylic to the cuticle. Leave the acrylic to dry for about 15mins, then use a nail file to finish the nail.
