It is always good practice not to work with live wires, safety always comes first. Therefore, you must be sure that when you are working on your home breakers, the main breaker must be shut off completely so that no electric current could pass through the wires and the breaker you are working with. First, you must secure the following to help you in your work:
• New circuit breaker • Phillips screwdriver • Slotted screwdriver • Wire strippers • Pliers
Step 1 Turn off the electricity in your home completely before doing your work on a certain breaker. If it is not possible for the time being, used rubberized gloves and you must take extreme care in removing the parts of the breaker, this is strongly not advisable though, you really should seek professional assistance if you cannot switch the power off.
Step 2 Locate the breaker which needs to be replaced. You must find out where are the four screws of the circuit breaker which hold it against the wall—remove them cautiously. If there are wires around the breaker, be sure to clear them off first to avoid further complications in your work.
Step 3 Most of the breakers have vertical clamps in the center; try to clear out of it so that you can safely remove the whole of breaker.
Step 4 You must take the screws loose enough to free the wires attached to the breaker.
Step 5 Pull the breaker carefully until it is removed completely and replace it with a new one.
Step 6 Carefully screw the new breaker and cautiously connect the wires and screws tightly. Be sure that they are no shorted circuits. Turn on the power when you are finished.
If in any doubt seek professional assistance.
