How To Build Bat Houses

Submitted by MeKnows on 08/28/2009
Bats are nocturnal animals which feed on ripe fruits and insects. Imagine that a single bat can consume hundreds of insects and mosquitoes in a single night. So building a house for them is a good decision. Being nocturnal animals, you will not have any problems with them during the day as they sleep and wake up when the sun is down. Aside from that, bat houses are very simply to build and can be done by anyone with or without good carpentry skills. So, instead of spraying insecticides which can be tiring and dangerous, bats will take care of those insects at night.

Before you begin building, be sure to have the following materials:
•    1 piece of ply wood
•    2 pine boards
•    1 box of steel screws
•    Boxes of paints
•    Saw, hammer and nails

Here are the steps you should follow when building a bat house:

Step 1
You may look for plans in any bat conservation websites; often plans are provided there for you to follow. Now, you may cut 3 pieces of smaller ply woods about 27 x 24 inches, 17 x 24 inches and 5 x 24 inches to construct walls of the bat house. You should cut the ply wood using an electric saw or just the manual one; both can be found in the nearest hardware stores.

Step 2
Take the wider piece of ply wood to cover up the bat house by simply cutting through the appropriate sizes. Apply darker paints inside the bat houses.

Step 3
Construct side supports by cutting appropriate sizes of boards. Attach the boards carefully so that the bat house will be built firmly. If you followed the measurement on step one you may cut 1 x 2 inches boards with three different sizes; 1 piece 24 inches and 2 pieces 21 inches.

Step 4
Nail two smaller pieces of ply wood in the front of the bat house. You must be sure that there is enough space for the bats to enter with appropriate opening for the air. Bats will not live in the house if they uncomfortable with it.

Step 5
To rather make the house more durable, use the screws to put everything into place especially the ply woods.

Step 6
Once the house is done, hang it on a tree. Be sure to make it face south or even east. That’s one technique for you to make sure the bats will live inside it. You must paint the outside of the house with a matt black or any darker colors.
