How To Build A Pet Door

Submitted by MeKnows on 08/28/2009
Pet doors are just an extension to your normal doors, basically extra entrances for the pets which go inside and out most often. These doors are the perfect solution if you don’t want your pets to leave their waste inside your house. The most usual pets which need these doors are dogs and cats. The good thing about these doors is that they are very easy to fit, and even those who don’t have diy skills should still be able to fit them. Before you put your hands to work on your own pet door, be sure to check if you have the following;

•    Hammer—this is one of the basic tool which you will need
•    Phillips screwdriver—you will need this to attach screws
•    Jigsaw—choose the one for your door but the usual blades for this is metal
•    Electric drill—be sure to have ½ inch drill bit
•    Pencils, tape measures and rulers
•    If you are fitting a premade pet door you will need very little

Installation

Step 1
Before anything else, you must measure your pets’ height as well as the width. This is to ensure that your pet will fit through the door you are making. However, if your pet is still growing, you must also consider how big it will become and make a bigger pet door for future use. Here are some basic measurements for the pets;
•    Extra Large—100 pounds up to 300 pounds
•    Large—50 to 100 pounds
•    Medium—20 to 50 pounds
•    Small—5 to 20 pounds

Step 2
Get the measurement of your door then make your own measurement for the pet door you are about to build. Usually, the holes for the pet doors are positioned in the center of the lower portion of the door.

Step 3
Find the center of your door and draw a crosshair into it. That will also be the center of the pet door and a reference to its four corners which you are about to do.

Step 4
Having been able to decide how large the hole you want to make, mark the four corners of the pet door and drill through to each mark.

Step 5
Using your jigsaw, cut through from one mark to the others until all four marks are done and a large rectangle is made into your door.

Step 6
Build frames and screw them on every side of the pet door. And you’re done. Now train your pet to pass through the pet door you just made for it.
