How To Read A Ruler

Submitted by Ellie L on 02/23/2009
Rulers are in important tool to understand, both in small standard desktop format or in larger tape

measure styles used for taking larger measurements, the princepal is the same for either. Rulers are

often used in the work place and in everyday life around the home, without the skill to use a ruler you

may end up embarrassed or unable to get even a basic task done.

Finding our how to read a ruler is easy, the standard modern English ruler shows two different styles of

measurement, on one side the older imperial inches, and the other the more modern metric centimeters.

Lets deal with the imperial side first, the standard ruler is made up of 12inches, each divided with

markings in half, and each half diving in halves again to give quarters. Each of the quarters are

divided into halves to give eigths and these in half again to give sixteenths.

The newer metric side is easier to understand with a total of 30 centimetres (cm) each cm is dividing

into 10, each of these is referred to as a millimeter (mm) so 10mm = 1cm. This can be expressed using a

decimal point, so one and a half cm's which is 1 cm and 5 mmm, can be written as 1.5cm.

Spend some time looking closely at your ruler and re-read this how to read a ruler guide a few times,

once you take it all in, the use of a ruler will become second natur
